About Shell Foundation

Raising incomes while lowering emissions

We ground our work in the needs of people earning less than a net living wage

Our 10 year objective

Playing a pivotal role

Since our inception nearly 25 years ago, Shell Foundation has worked towards alleviating poverty in Africa and Asia. We have played a critical role in advancing the energy access sector to tackle this issue. We are now on a mission to be at the heart of scaling it.

Our objective is to enable 60 million people to raise their income while lowering emissions by 2032.

We achieve this goal by fostering innovation and scaling technologies that increase incomes for three core people:

  • A smallholder farmer
  • A transporter
  • A micro-entrepreneur

We connect global investors from across the public and private sectors with world-class businesses and innovative technology to catalyse local entrepreneurship.

Our ways of working

Our ways of working

Shell Foundation believes that clean energy solutions that raise incomes while cutting emissions are critical in providing opportunity, equity, and a sustainable future. At the core of this belief there are four critical values that we aspire to demonstrate in our work:

  • Customer-centricity: We care deeply about the specific needs and aspirations of the people we serve and how clean energy can improve their lives.
  • Willingness to take risk: We use our resources to de-risk investments for other organisations, and to catalyse financial vehicles that are aligned to achieving income uplift through clean energy.
  • Agility and innovation: We are nimble in decision-making and solution design. We look for creative ways to solve difficult problems.
  • Evidence-driven: Shell Foundation creates and leverages data and intelligence to support scaling of the most impactful technologies; we know through experience what financing and support is required, and when, to scale solutions that can impact millions of lives.
Applying a diversity, equity and inclusion lens

How Shell Foundation applies a diversity, equity and inclusion lens

We consistently apply a diversity, equity and inclusion lens in our decision making, seeking solutions that empower as many women as men to deliver impactful and equitable outcomes. We establish minimum standards to be met by all Shell Foundation partners and require measurable progress year-on-year.
